Employers
Your obligations as an employer:
- Follow the conditions set out in the Training Agreement and Training Plan.
- Provide a quality work experience and structured training program.
- Pay the right wages and other allowances.
- Make sure qualified people supervise apprentice/trainee.
- Provide a safe and healthy workplace.
- Encourage apprentice/trainee to raise issues in the workplace.
- Conform to relevant State and Commonwealth legislation.
- Provide release from routine duties as outlined in the Training Plan and Training Agreement and.
- Acknowledge that time training off-the-job is paid time.
How to employ an apprentice or trainee
To employ an apprentice or trainee you can contact:
Job Employment and Training (JET)
JET is a web-based employment portal that focuses on apprenticeships and traineeships. Weekly vacancies are sent out to registered participants.

Once you have employed an apprentice or trainee:
- Inform the apprentice/trainee of employment conditions.
- Complete a Training Agreement.
- Make provision for superannuation for the apprentice/trainee.
- Make sure the apprentice/trainee is covered by a WorkCover policy.
- Confirm Commonwealth Government incentives available to you as an employer.
- Make sure apprentice/trainee is enrolled at RMIT
- A Training Plan must be negotiated and developed with RMIT and the apprentice/trainee.
- The employer, the apprentice/trainee and RMIT must all sign the Training Plan.
- Apply for Commonwealth incentives after the three-month waiting period.
- Prepare on-the-job training as described in the training program.
