Apprenticeship and traineeships

At RMIT programs are linking people with sound vocational pathways. You will earn an income while studying a nationally recognised qualification. You will gain the skills and business knowledge to become your own boss and start your own business.

What is a pre-apprenticeship?

  • A pre-apprenticeship enables you to learn basic skills in a particular field and prepares you for an apprenticeship
  • It lasts for up to six months
  • No employment is required.

What is an apprenticeship/traineeship?

  • Apprentices and trainees are employed under a government-approved training contract
  • Apprentices/trainees can be aged 15 and over
  • Apprentices are trained for three to four years and trainees for one to two years
  • Training can be developed to suit your needs (on or off-the-job).

School-based programs

The school-based programs allow Year 11 and 12 students to undertake VCE or VCAL while being in paid part-time employment and complete a nationally recognised VET qualification. The program takes eighteen months to two years to complete.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You must be 15 years and over
  • Be employed for a minimum of 15 hours per week, including structured training
  • You must have the support of your school
  • Parents or guardians need to sign a training contact with the
    employer.
