Tze Min Koh’s feedback about RIIERP

Tze Min Koh

RIIERP Placement: EADS ASTRIUM, Friedrichshafen, Germany, 2007

I was exposed to a multi-national space design project where constraints were tight and realistic, and gained an understanding of space projects where fundamental theories are based on the training and knowledge attained from RMIT. During the six months of my industry experience program with EADS Astrium, I was involved in several projects. Firstly, Single-walled Sapphire Cartridge (Siwasaca) where my supervisor and I were assigned the prototype cartridge design, test setup and project management role for this contract. Secondly, ICAPS Pre-cursor Experiment (Interaction of Cosmic and Atmospheric Particle System) whereby we were in charge of testing and characterising the cleaning system of a dust trapping device. Thirdly, design of Oxygen Sensing and Control Experimental Chamber for an Electro-Magnetic Levitator Project.

I have learnt to appreciate working hand in hand in a multi-cultural environment whereby elites from different parts of the world appreciate each other’s differences, while they harness their strength to achieve the common goal: professional excellence. RIIERP provided me a gateway to expand my horizon, where culture and settings are very different from my homeland. One of the major highlights was visiting the Le Bourget Paris Air-show which was fully provided by the company and being given special privileges as staff member of EADS Group.

RIIERP provided me a platform to transition from a university learning setting to a professional engineering setting within a company of high prestige and excellence. Participation in this program has remarkably enhanced my opportunity of being employed in a top aerospace company.
