During the 2nd semester of 2009, I spent 5 months working at the European Aerospace and Defence Systems (EADS) Astrium: Space Transportation, in Bremen, Germany. I found this to be a very rewarding experience, as not only did I get to work in the highly competitive Space Industry, I also got to see some of the most incredible human inventions that have been and are being created, such as the infamous Airbus Beluga (for transportation of Airbus Parts) and the building of the European Space Agency’s Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV). I also had the privilege of working on one of the company’s new and exciting projects, which is an ongoing, and expected to finish in 2012. Just because I was deemed an ‘intern’ did not mean that my work was any less important than the full time employees of EADS.
Bremen itself is a beautiful city, with plenty of history, events, such as Freimarkt and the beautiful Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Markets), and for those like me, shopping. Being located in the North of Germany also gave me great access to the rest of Europe. As the workplace was situated next door to the airport, it was very easy and convenient to visit other areas of Germany (and Europe) on the weekends, making my experience overseas exhilarating and one that I will never forget. The lessons that I learned and the experience that I gained in the industry will stay with me forever, and I would highly recommend the RIIERP program to those who are looking for a different and memorable way to do their industry placements.
