RIIERP – Six ways to go
The RMIT International Industry Experience and Research Program (RIIERP) is the only one of its kind in Australia. It provides opportunities for students across all RMIT disciplines to undertake international work experience and research within leading organisations in Europe, North America and Asia.
RIIERP offers six main work placement and collaborative research opportunities. These program components have been designed to match student needs with company requirements and to maximise the relevance of participating students’ current level of study and experience.
The components are:
- Work Experience
- Bachelor Thesis Project
- Graduate Traineeship
- Postgraduate Research
- Postdoctoral Fellowship
- Special Projects
Work Experience
This program offers students at the appropriate year levels the opportunity to be part of high-performing multinational teams providing an excellent foundation for their professional development.
Gain work experience with a world-class international company and exposure to work ethic in different cultural settings. A RIIERP placement may guide your future career and greatly enhance your job prospects. Students from all disciplines are welcome to apply.
Length: 6 to 12 months
Applicants: Undergraduate students
- Four or five year programs: Applicants must be in at least their third year
- Three year programs: Applicants must be in at least their second year
Conditions:
- Students are paid living allowances; the amount varies from company to company
- Companies usually help participants find accommodation
- Students must enroll in an International Industry Experience course

This component of the program provides students the opportunity to undertake their final year projects at world-class facilities around the globe.
You have the opportunity to collaborate with peers from different countries and refine your professional and interpersonal skills. Working at a high-tech company or research institution under the supervision of industry experts can open the door to potential employment with the respective company or inspire further research at a postgraduate level.
Length: 6 to 10 months
Applicants: Final year students
Conditions:
- Students are paid living allowances; the amount varies from company to company
- Companies usually help participants find accommodation
- Students must enroll in an International Industry Experience course
- Students must complete and submit their thesis by the end of the internship

This component of the program is your gateway to becoming a professional.
You will be working in a reputable international company for 6 to 12 months which will ease your transition into the increasingly competitive global job market. RIIERP Graduates are highly in demand by the Australian and international industry. Some graduates have been offered full-time employment abroad as a result of their performance on this program.
Length: 6 to 12 months
Applicants: Final year students and graduates
Conditions:
- Students are paid living allowances; the amount varies from company to company
- Companies usually help participants find accommodation
- Graduates must enroll in an RMIT graduate program and an International Industry Experience course

As a RIIERP postgraduate student you have the opportunity to work and conduct your research in some of the best research facilities worldwide.
In response to increasingly diversified areas of research, RIIERP has established collaboration with high-tech companies such as BASF AG, Robert Bosch GmbH, Volkswagen AG, TRANE, as well as reputable international research institutions such as the German Aerospace Research Establishment in Oberpfaffenhofen Space Division and Stuttgart Space Division, and the Space and Astronautics Division in Collogne.
As well as sharing their expertise and infrastructural resources these partners provide co-supervision and generous grants to support participating students.
Length: 2 to 3 years.
Applicants: Postgraduate students
Conditions:
- Students receive generous research grants from partner organisations and have access to their research facilities for the duration of their research programs
- Companies jointly supervise the thesis with RMIT University
- The senior supervisor must be an RMIT academic
Back to topPostdoctoral Fellowship
As a postdoctoral fellow you have the opportunity to hone your research skills at renowned research institutions around the world. Enjoy access to global research infrastructure and be part of RMIT’s collaborative research and consulting work with world class partner institutions overseas.
This component of the program promotes RMIT’s active involvement in high quality research at an international level and offers the opportunity to publish in reputable international journal and conference proceedings.
Length: 1 to 2 years.
Applicants: Postdoctoral fellows
Conditions:
- Postdoctoral fellows receive similar conditions to employees of the organisation where they are placed.

This component of the program was introduced to enable students who are not able to go overseas to be involved in high-quality multinational projects during the course of their studies at RMIT campuses.
You will have the opportunity to work on projects for partner companies while attending your normal lectures at RMIT. You will learn to work in a consulting capacity as you manage the projects and keep in regular communication with the overseas company.
Conditions:
- Students are paid by companies as consultants
- Video or audio conferences are held regularly with company teams to evaluate the work done by students
