1. What services do RMIT Security provide?

RMIT Security provides the following services to RMIT University’s onshore campuses:

  • Twenty-four-hour campus patrol
  • Provision of after-hours access cards for RMIT staff (part-time, full-time and sessional staff) and students (part-time and full-time students)
  • Management of security systems, including a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system
  • Collection and analysis of criminal activity statistics on campus
  • Coordination of investigations into any criminal activity on campus
  • Provision of on and off-campus training on how to increase personal safety
  • Operation of the University’s locking system
  • Provision of and installation of new locks and keys to the University

2. What are RMIT Security’s hours of operation?

RMIT Security is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Visit the Contact RMIT Security web page for phone numbers and locations.

4. What is an after-hours access card?

Both students and staff are eligible for after-hours access cards – also known as security access cards – which provide them with secure, after-hours access to nominated RMIT buildings. 5. I am an RMIT student. How do I obtain an after-hours access card?

7. Who should I contact if I have an issue to raise about a member of RMIT Security?

8. What is considered to be an on-campus emergency?

An emergency is an event (actual or imminent) which in any way endangers or threatens to endanger the safety or health of any person; or destroys or damages, or threatens to destroy or damage, any University property.

Emergencies that may occur within a University environment include:

  • armed intrusion
  • threats
  • gas leaks/ chemical spills
  • persons trapped in lifts
  • medical emergencies
  • public disorder
  • minor/major fires


9. Who do I contact in the event of an emergency on campus?

For emergencies on the following onshore campuses – Brunswick, Bundoora and City – phone the RMIT Security emergency number:

  • Ext. 53333 (Internal phone call)
  • Phone: 9925 3333 (External phone call)

If you are unable to get through, phone Ext 0 -000 (if dialing from within RMIT) or 000 (if not calling from an RMIT phone) and request the service: Police, Fire Brigade, Ambulance.

In the event of a medical emergency:

  • Contact the nearest first aider If necessary, call an ambulance on 0-000 (if dialing from within RMIT) or 000 (if not calling from an RMIT phone)
  • If an ambulance is called, notify Security on Ext. 53333 to facilitate ambulance access on to campus.

  • For emergencies on the Hamilton campus:

  • Dial Ext. 53333 (Security) OR (03) 5572 5740 OR Mobile 0418 301 875 OREmergency Staff contact number, 0407 041 210.
  • If there is no answer on any of the above numbers, dial 000 and ask for the emergency service required.

  • In the event of a medical emergency:
  • Contact the nearest first aider
  • If necessary, call an ambulance on 000.

If an ambulance is called, notify Security on Ext. 53333 OR (03) 5572 5740 or Mobile number 0418 301 875 to facilitate ambulance access on to campus.

10. I am a staff member or student and I use a wheelchair. Who do I contact for assistance if I am in an RMIT building, the lifts malfunction and I am unable to vacate the building?

Please contact RMIT Security’s emergency number on Ext 53333 (Internal. Please note that there are emergency phones on every level of every building) or 9925 3333 (if you cannot access the emergency phone on your level and are using your’s or someone else’s mobile phone.)

RMIT Security will assess your situation and determine what service to call upon – either an Ambulance – if you urgently need access to medication that you have in another location – or the Fire Brigade if you need assistance with vacating the building.

Under no circumstances, do not allow a member of staff or students to attempt to carry you out of the building. They are not equipped to deal with such a situation and could injure you and/or themselves.


11. I have just witnessed a robbery on campus. What do I do?

If you have witnessed a robbery of either someone’s personal property or RMIT-owned property, contact RMIT Security on your campus who report the theft to the Police and compile an incident report.


12. I have been robbed on campus? What do I do?

If you have been robbed on campus, contact RMIT Security on your campus. RMIT Security will compile an incident report and will advise you how to contact the Police to report the robbery.


13. How do I place a request for a locksmithing service?

To request a Locksmithing service, please contact Property Services’ Service Desk. You can either phone the Service Desk on Ext. 52111 or email them at propserv.service.desk@rmit.edu.au.

Some locksmithing services incur a charge, so you must provide an Internal Order Number and a Cost Element (aka Cost Centre Code) when logging your request.


14. How do I order a key?

Place an order via the Property Services Service Desk. When giving the information, please ensure that you supply all the relevant information required such as:

  1. How many key(s) you require
  2. Key number/code
  3. Key Holder name (Person or persons who will be using the key(s)
  4. Internal Order Number and Cost Element (aka Cost Centre Code)

*Please note, if you are ordering a restricted key (Status 6 or TWIN) then ONLY a School/Department Key Control Officer is authorised to order/sign for these keys.


15. How long does it take to get a new key?

Once you place an order via the Property Services’ Service Desk, new keys take 1 to 2 business days to complete.

16. My lock's not working or requires maintenance. Who do I contact?

Place an order via the Property Services Service Desk. When giving the information, please ensure that you supply all the relevant information required such as:

  1. Your contact details
  2. What is wrong with the lock
  3. Where the door / lock is located

17. How do I change my lock cylinder?

If you need your lock cylinder changed or re-keyed, you must first discuss this with your Key Control Officer who has the responsibility to either authorise or decline your request.

If the Key Control Officer authorises your request, he/she will log the request with the Property Services’ Service Desk.


18. What happens if I lose a key?

If you lose a key, you MUST immediately report this to RMIT Security, RMIT Locksmiths and the relevant Key Control Officer for your School/College/Department.

From there, the appropriate action can be taken to replace the keys and the integrity of the University’s security can be maintained.

Often, lost keys are handed in at one of RMIT Security’s Control Points or at the RMIT University Locksmith Workshop (Ext. 52518).

Please check with us when you report the lost key(s) to ensure that they haven’t been found or handed in.


19. What happens if I find a key?

If you find a key(s), please hand it in at either the RMIT Security Control Point on your campus or the RMIT University Locksmith Workshop, if you are based on the City campus.

If you are unable to reach a Security Control Point or the RMIT University Locksmith Workshop, please hand them into your Key Control Officer to hand back to us.


20. What do I do if I move office or move to a new division?

If you are moving office, you will most likely need a new key and/or cylinder. In most cases, your School/Department/Division Key Control Officer will organise this for you.

If the office move is being undertaken in conjunction with the Property Services’ Projects Branch, then the relevant Key Control Officer will already have been in contact with RMIT University Locksmiths and a key/cylinder will be organised for when you move into the newly refurbished premises.
