Hi and welcome to RMIT Security. I have been a member of the University’s Security division for the past ten years. In that time, I have held the positions of Security Officer, Acting Senior Officer, Acting Security Manager and, for the past year, the role of Manager, Security for RMIT’s onshore campuses. I lead a hard-working team of 48 RMIT staff and contractor Security staff who are here to protect the University community.
RMIT Security is committed to ensuring that the University’s campuses are safe places for the RMIT community and their visitors. The Security team patrols the campuses 24 hours a day, seven days a week and we also have CCTV cameras to monitor activity on campus.
These measures are in place to ensure the RMIT community’s safety and to enable staff and students to go about their day-to-day business knowing that their environment is stable and assistance is close at hand.
RMIT does face some challenges. The University’s largest campus, the City campus, is in the middle of the Melbourne CBD – a convenient and exciting location for our staff and students – but one that is open to the general public. While Security takes every measure to thwart illegal activities on campus – like theft of both personal and University property – the RMIT community must also play a part in making the University a safer place.
RMIT Security encourages and educates the RMIT community to take responsibility for their personal safety – both on and off campus – and to look out for and report any suspicious activity on University grounds. To be alert and prepared for any situation is empowering and to know that you are contributing to a safer work and study environment is very satisfying.
I encourage you to take a good look at our web site to familiarise yourself with safety information, including tips on minimising the risk of theft; advice on how to maximise your personal safety; what to do in the event of an emergency; and building evacuation procedures. Arm yourself with knowledge and take charge of your safety.
Our focus here at Security is to protect and help you. We recommend that you record our contact details in your mobile phone or telephone and address book. Remember, we are only a phone call away.
Regards
Sai Ly
