RMIT University graduate Julie Paul has won the inaugural Tapestry Foundation of Victoria Kate Derum Award, worth $1,000.

The award was created in honour of Kate Derum, a former studio manager of the Victorian Tapestry Workshop, who died in 2008.

Director of the Victorian Tapestry Workshop, Antonia Syme, said: “This award is a celebration of Kate as an accomplished artist, adored teacher, avid supporter of the workshop and an ambassador for Australian tapestry.

“She was a wonderful role model and leader, and positively influenced the lives of so many young artists.”

The award is open to students who have graduated in arts with tapestry studies within the past three years.

Ms Paul has a long-standing interest in stitching and a love and admiration for the hand-made.

She formalised these interests by completing a Diploma in Art (Studio Textiles and Design), now named Textile Design and Development, majoring in Tapestry.

She enjoys pushing the boundaries of materials and techniques and is inspired by the natural environment, especially the seashore.

Cresside Collette, one of Ms Paul’s teachers, said: “Julie has been a valued student who has performed exceptionally well in all her subjects over the years.

“She has also contributed her time and ideas generously to Studio Textiles (now named Textile Design and Development) and I am delighted that she has been honoured with a very well-deserved acknowledgment of her talent.

“She is a great example of how mature-age students flourish in this course, finding new and exciting directions in their lives, and as a teacher it is very fulfilling to be part of this process.”

Ms Paul, who completed her program in 2008, said: “I enjoyed the varied areas of theoretical and practical study, from studies of colour, practical design work, studying the historical uses of textiles, the production of textiles using various traditional and experimental techniques, to using computers for design work.

“I also enjoyed the opportunities to participate in workshops with overseas tutors, and listen to industry experts and practitioners.”

Ms Paul is working on several tapestries for exhibitions and institutions and hopes to have a solo exhibition.
