Japanese honour for professor

Professor Jorma Ahokas from the School of Medical Sciences at RMIT University has been awarded the Degree of Honorary Doctor of Science by Toho University in Japan.

The award was made during recent festivities marking the 60th anniversary of the Department of Biology at Toho University.

Toho University was founded in 1925 as the Imperial Women's Medical College, becoming the Imperial Women's Medical and Pharmaceutical College and the Imperial Women's College of Science.

After World War Two, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Faculty of Science moved to Funabashi, Chiba.

With the reform of the Japanese school system in 1950, Toho University became a coeducational institution, focusing on natural sciences, including the faculties of Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Science.

Professor Ahokas has collaborated with the staff of Toho’s Department of Biology for more than a decade to extend the educational experience of their biology students through his expertise in toxicology.

The honorary degree was conferred by the President of Toho University, Professor Tsugutoshi Aoki.
