RMIT will be participating in Earth Hour for the fourth consecutive year in 2011.

On Saturday 26 March 2011 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm RMIT will be participating in Earth Hour for the fourth consecutive year.

Earth Hour is a call to action to every individual, every business and every community. It all starts with a flick of a switch, in a collective display of commitment to protect the one thing that unites us all - the planet.

In 2010 RMIT recorded a 20% reduction in energy consumption for the duration of Earth Hour and we hope to make an even greater impact this year.

To support RMIT's participation in Earth Hour staff and students are asked to:

  • Turn off all non-essential lighting and electrical appliances.
  • Switch off PCs, monitors and printers.
  • Switch off any research equipment that is not in use before 8.30pm on Saturday, 26 March.

Please note:

  • Workspaces across the University may be dark for several hours on Saturday night as the lighting systems will take time to switch back on.
  • Fridges will be exempt.
  • For safety reasons, all essential emergency lighting will be activated during Earth Hour.

This year, people are asked to think about their actions beyond Earth Hour to reduce their environmental footprint. For more information about what you can do, visit the Earth Hour website.

Throughout 2011 RMIT will be going beyond Earth Hour with a wide range of sustainability initiatives. Regularly check RMIT's Think Green website for the latest sustainability news.
