Search results
How results are ranked
Search results are displayed in ranked order. Ranking places the most relevant documents, to the search terms you entered into the search box, at the top of the search results list. This is done by finding the documents that contain all of the search terms, then sorting by rank (ranking) the results. Ranking does not occur if the number of results returned was greater than 500. By default, each word you enter in the search box must be in the matched documents. Add words to refine your search.
Ranking in the RMIT web site is based on three factors:
- The number of search terms in the matching document. The greater the number, the higher it ranks.
- The length of the document. If both a long and short document have 10 matches each, then the short document is considered more relevant.
- The rarity of the search term. A rare word ranks higher than a common word (like 'the'). This is based solely on the content of the web site, not a dictionary of rare words.

Search results are relative to documents you are allowed to see. You may see more matches to your search if you login.
